Business Operations Manager

The Business Operations Manager will serve as a nexus between the Operations and Finance Departments, serving as the lead coordinator and liaison with customers on asset sales, tax equity, and debt financing deals for solar energy deals. The position will also be an aide to the COO and in charge of tracking key business metrics and data, including project cost, financial closing status, and historical prices.  

What you’ll do:

  • 30% Assist with Purchase Agreements and Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) creation

    • Work with the General Counsel to produce the Conditional Precedents (CPs), list of documents, contracts, and all materials owned by our Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) to our buyers and make sure the right documents get noted in these contracts.

    • Schedule, track and manage the completion of the CPs and project closings. Work with buyers and coordinate internally the communication on CPs and closings.

    • Provide regular updates to COO and CEO on closings as needed, including outstanding items and what needs to be done at close.

    • Keep Smart Sheets up to date for CSG projects, answer comments, and take action to make sure outstanding items are received in time for closing. 

    • Lead diligence and coordination on projects Novel could potentially acquire from other developers.
      Engage in business development and networking with other 

  • 20% Serve as coordinator and liaison on deal items for debt financing for Community solar projects

    • Interface with lenders on necessary documents

    • Be responsible for the deal tracker spreadsheet and closing items

    • Work with operations, finance, development, and land to understand the status of projects ready for debt financing

    • Create and execute EPC, Operations and Maintenance Contracts, and other legal documents necessary for closing

  • 10% Assist with Overall Operations

    • Assist the COO with obtaining Tax Equity for solar projects, working with consultants as necessary, running down internal items needed for review by potential tax equity investors, schedule meetings and phone calls, prep CEO and others as needed.

    • Coordinate with C-team and managers to create process documents, video training recordings, and step-by-step guides that are repeatable and scalable, allowing Novel Energy to build systems and process.

    • Assist in the creation of investment proposals, marketing materials, as needed.

    • Assist the COO and C-team with implementing a Lean culture, process creation and improvement, and other duties as needed. 

    • Misc. Administrative tasks (Signatures, setting up meetings, setting up data rooms, sharing data room access)

  • 5% Assist CFO with cash flow analysis

  • 15% Manage insurance requirements needed for investors

  • 10% Lead Renewable Energy Credit (REC) Applications and Payments 

    • Lead the Illinois Distributed Generation (DG) project registration and REC standing order registration in PJM GATS. 

    • Lead the IL DG REC payment collection from utilities and disbursement to customers. 

  • 10% Track critical information and data 

    • Track CSG cost and pricing information, including Member Interest Purchase Agreement (MIPA) pricing and Interconnection Agreement (IA) costs.

    • Track diligence item’s status, including Section 10 items, insurance, legal entity creation, and project funding. 


Our Ideal Candidate has:

  • CPA 

  • Minimum 2 years Management experience

  • 2 years’ experience with contracts, dealing with clients, communicating with external vendors, and managing a high volume of documentation

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point

  • A desire to learn about solar development and energy management

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with a close-knit team

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills, including the ability to communicate in a positive manner with project managers, other engineering/design team members, management, and installation contractors to foster an environment of superior coordination.

  • Good problem solving and critical thinking abilities and a proactive work ethic. Must take accountability of own body of work, closing each project by design completion efficiently, while maintaining accuracy and strict attention to detail.

  • Strong ability to apply innovative and creative skills to problem solving
